Cartagena was recognized for the work and programming of the festival, and was compared with other festivals held in Spain and Portugal in 2019. The award will be awarded to the best festivals, artists, sponsors and media from all over the Iberian Peninsula.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the award ceremony was held this year after it has been rescheduled twice.

In addition to music, La Mar de Músicas also integrates art, film and literature. It was previously awarded at the 2017 Iberian Music Festival Awards. That year, the Cartagena Music Festival organized by the City Council each year won the Best Small Format Music Festival Award.
