Covid-19: Sicilian authorities asked Cuba to send medical staff

The Sicilian authorities have asked the Cuban government to send about 60 medical staff, including doctors and nurses, to the area.

According to the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, this request was submitted to the Italian Embassy in Cuba this week and involved intensive care specialists, nurses, anesthesiologists, resuscitators, virologists and pneumoniaists.

Between March and April this year, the Cuban medical team took over the hardest hit areas by the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy, such as Lombardy and Piedmont, to replace overworked Italian professionals.

From South Africa to Suriname, other medical teams are also scattered around the world, fighting against Covid-19 in 20 other countries.

Sicily’s Covid-19 Emergency Commissioner Renato Costa told la Repubblica: ”The Cuban government has a team of doctors and nurses who are willing to go to work in other countries, and we ask for their help.” ”We know, recently. In a few weeks, other parts of Italy have also sought help from Cuba. We just hope that they will come to us first. I am in contact with the embassy and the embassy welcomes our request.”
