Following the award in Europe, Algarve has beaten off competition from all over the world and was named the best beach destination, ahead of 18 other nominations, including the Maldives, Thailand, Jamaica, Mexico and the United States. 

The award is considered to be an extraordinary achievement with greater significance this year in Algarve. This is particularly challenging for the tourism industry, resulting in destinations having to provide new solutions to encourage tourism while maintaining safety. 

Turismo DoAlgarve President João Fernandes said: “This year, double honor is more important than ever, because once the confidence level of travel starts to increase, tourists will want to choose the destination that provides the best guarantee.”
