France: Nice mayor calls on to stop tourism

The mayor of Nicein southern France on Sunday called for a weekend lockdown in the area to reduce the flow of tourists as it fights a sharp rise in coronavirus infections and triples the national rate.

According to Covidtracker.fr, France has the highest COVID-19 infection rate in the Niceregion, with 740 new cases per 100,000 residents per week.

“We need to take strong measures to go beyond 6 pm nationwide. We need Curfews, stricter curfews or partial and specific time lockouts. Weekend lockdown will make sense.” Mayor Christian Estrosipointed out on franceinfo radio.

Before the second nationwide blockade was ordered in November, the government imposed a curfew on some cities.

Esterosi said the infection rate has soared due to the influx of tourists during the Christmas holidays. International flights to the city have soared from 20 per day before Christmas to 120 throughout the holiday, all without the need for virus testing in the country of origin or destination.
