Portugal resumes checks along borders with Spain

Spain and Portugal have temporarily resumed checks along their common border until February 10, as the Lisbon authorities scrambled to control the surge in Covid-19 cases.

After voting to extend the state of emergency, Portugal proposed new measures on Sunday that only allow people to work and study across the border and visit partners. The Spanish in Portugal will be allowed to return to Spain.

The border is 1,200 kilometers long and is the only land border in Portugal. It was temporarily closed at the first round of Covid-19 conference in March 2020.

Portuguese health authorities reported 293 Covid-related deaths and more than 12,400 new cases on Saturday.
