Portugal: Madeira Islands to reopen next October

Madeira‘s government anticipates a full resumption of operations in October.

“The Flower Festival, which is intended to be held in the first week of October, will be the first major event and the reopening, as it were, of normality,” Miguel Albuquerque said. “About 70% of the population will already be vaccinated.”

At Praça do Povo in Funchal, the minister was speaking at the unveiling of the latest image ‘Marca Madeira,’ which will appear on all promotional and contact content for the destination.

Miguel Albuquerque, the executive director of the PSD/CDS-PP coalition, reaffirmed that health officials plan to vaccinate 70% of the archipelago’s population.

According to the most recent statistics, approximately 60,000 doses of covid-19 vaccine have been administered in the country, which had 310 active covid-19 cases on April 11th, out of a total of 8,599 recorded since March 2020, and 71 deaths associated with the disease.

“We will have the Flower Festival in the usual way in the first week of October, and certain activities will be planned in the following months,” he said, emphasizing that there will be no other large-scale events until then.

The Flower Festival, which is one of the region’s most famous events, normally takes place in May and draws thousands of visitors and locals to Funchal, but the date has been modified in 2020 owing to unforeseen circumstances.
