Portugal has opened its first dog park

The 800-square-meter Park’Animal is the product of Mariana Carvalho’s proposal for “a leisure zone where animals may have fun and get some exercise, free of leashes,” according to a statement from the Câmara de Gaia.

It contains “various entertainment elements for the animals” and “a walled area to prevent escapes,” according to the municipality, which “spent €20,000 in the execution of the project” with the “support of the Board of Arcozelo Parish.” Enjoyed this post? The project’s goals were to “renovate a dysfunctional space (Arcozelo Maintenance Circuit),” Mariana Carvalho explained, “give animals a suitable place for their walks, where they have no restrictions, reduce the amount of animal waste scattered on the streets and public gardens, and reduce accidents during walks on public roads.”

According to the paper, the equipment in the space “makes a circuit where a center clearing area is maintained so that animals can exercise without obstructions and in complete safety.”

“Youth as an opportunity and young people as positive agents of change with revolutionary potential,” said Mayor Eduardo Vitor Rodrigues.

“We’re striving to value young people’s rights and voices, to recognize the worth of youth labor, and to create conditions and opportunity for young people to actively participate in the city’s growth,” he said.

The municipality provided “a record total amount of 360,000 euros, the most in the country, with three areas in competition: creativity, culture and sport, environment and sustainability, and technology and entrepreneurship” in the most recent edition of the Gaia Participative Youth Budget.
