Austria: Iconic Mozartkugel sweets maker goes bankrupt

The corona crisis is also hitting the sweet side of life: the Salzburg chocolate company based in Grödig (Flachgau), for the American company Mondelez, which produces Mirabell‘s “Real Salzburg Mozartkugel”, has filed for bankruptcy.

Despite being profitable in recent years, the company has been hit hard by the corona pandemic since 2020, chief executive Christian Schügerl wrote in an email to employees and business partners, according to ORF. Enjoyed this post? Never miss out on future posts by following us.

Demand for sweets has continued to decline due to the pandemic, possibly due to a drop in sales.

The corona measures in Austria meant that travel, events and occasions like birthdays and weddings are barely taking place – a major setback for the confectionery industry.

A total of 140 employees and 614 creditors are expected to be affected by the bankruptcy.

It remains to be seen whether the company can be restructured and moved on.

In the meantime, the product will go on sale during the holidays and Christmas markets, at least while stocks last.
