Greece: How Athens Among Top 20 Leisure Cities is the New Hotness

According to ForwardKeys “2021 in Review” study, which highlights the top travel trends for this year, Athens is among the top 20 leisure destinations, particularly for US travelers.

According to the travel analytics firm’s study, Athens is ranked 15th among the top 20 destination cities this year.


Cancun, Istanbul, New York, Miami, Paris, London, Cairo, Madrid, Amsterdam, Punta Cana (Dominican Republic), San Juan (Puerto Rico), Lisbon, Mexico City, Palma Mallorca, Rome, Barcelona, and Frankfurt are at the top of the list.

According to ForwardKeys, a comparison of the world’s top destination cities before the pandemic in 2019, and throughout 2021, reveals a strong tendency toward leisure travel, which will help the economy recover. Enjoyed this post? Never miss out on future posts by following us.

According to ForwardKeys researchers, the following are key takeaways and trends:
– Leisure travel in the United States is expected to fuel recovery.

– foreign air travel was just over a quarter (26%) of pre-pandemic levels: Flight arrivals increased from 5% in the first half of the year (H1) to 10% in the second half of the year (H2). Europe achieved 30%, Asia Pacific region 8%, Africa & the Middle East 36%, and the Americas 40%.


– flight arrivals increased from 5% in the first half of the year (H1) to 10% in the second half of the year (H2). Flight arrivals increased from 14 percent to 45 percent in Europe, 24 percent to 48 percent in the Middle East and Africa, and 30 percent to 52 percent in the Americas.

– Central America (El Salvador and Belize) and the Caribbean (all holiday favorites for US travelers) maintained their visitor numbers the best. Many of them managed to maintain visitation rates above 60% of 2019 levels throughout the year.

– travel to the Middle East is picking up, with travel to Turkey increasing from 33% in H1 to 67 percent in H2 of pre-pandemic levels, and travel to Egypt increasing from 37% to 72 percent.

– domestic travel has increased, particularly in large countries like Brazil (148%), China (76%), Russia (128%), and the United States (87%) of pre-pandemic levels in H2 2021.
