According to ForwardKeys “2021 in Review” study, which highlights the top travel trends for this year, Athens is among the top 20 leisure destinations, particularly for US travelers.
According to the travel analytics firm’s study, Athens is ranked 15th among the top 20 destination cities this year.
Cancun, Istanbul, New York, Miami, Paris, London, Cairo, Madrid, Amsterdam, Punta Cana (Dominican Republic), San Juan (Puerto Rico), Lisbon, Mexico City, Palma Mallorca, Rome, Barcelona, and Frankfurt are at the top of the list.

According to ForwardKeys researchers, the following are key takeaways and trends:
– Leisure travel in the United States is expected to fuel recovery.
– foreign air travel was just over a quarter (26%) of pre-pandemic levels: Flight arrivals increased from 5% in the first half of the year (H1) to 10% in the second half of the year (H2). Europe achieved 30%, Asia Pacific region 8%, Africa & the Middle East 36%, and the Americas 40%.

– travel to the Middle East is picking up, with travel to Turkey increasing from 33% in H1 to 67 percent in H2 of pre-pandemic levels, and travel to Egypt increasing from 37% to 72 percent.
– domestic travel has increased, particularly in large countries like Brazil (148%), China (76%), Russia (128%), and the United States (87%) of pre-pandemic levels in H2 2021.
