Greece revokes quarantine requirement for US and EU travelers

The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) announced on Monday that quarantine prohibitions have been lifted for travelers from the European Union and five other countries who have been completely vaccinated or screened negative for Covid-19.

According to the amended Covid-19 aviation directive (NOTAM), beginning Monday, April 19, travelers from all EU member states and Schengen region countries, the United States, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Serbia, and Israel would be able to reach Greece without having to endure the obligatory seven-day quarantine only if:

a. they have a negative PCR test less than three days (72 hours) before their journey, or b. they have a negative PCR test more than three days (72 hours) before their trip.

b. they hold an English-language vaccine certificate from a public body confirming that their entire Covid-19 vaccination was completed 14 days ago.

Furthermore, the Covid-19 aviation directive (NOTAM), which was amended on Monday, expands limits on domestic and international flights until April 26.

Domestic scheduled, commercial, and general/business flights in Greece are all subject to the non-essential travel ban.

Only necessary travel for health and industry, family reunification, and returning to permanent residence is permitted under the aviation directive.

Passengers on foreign flights to Greece must have to fill out the Passenger Locator Form (PLF).

The law also extends to Greek nationals and permanent residents who fly outside of the country (outbound travel).

They must complete the PLF form prior to leaving Greece and display it at border checkpoints.

Both international travelers are required to apply a negative Covid-19 test result (PCR) conducted up to 72 hours prior to arrival in Greece, and may be asked to take a rapid Covid-19 test upon entry (depending on the data provided on the PLF forms).

If a passenger is chosen for a quick screening and tests positive for the coronavirus, he or she will be quarantined for 14 days.

All passengers entering Greece from a foreign country must self-isolate for seven days, either at home (for permanent residents) or at the temporary residence mentioned on the PLF.

Travelers from all EU member states and Schengen region countries, the United States, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Serbia, and Israel are exempt from the obligatory quarantine if they have been properly vaccinated or screened negative for Covid-19.

The provisional ban on non-EU citizens entering Greece has been updated. Only people from the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Thailand, Rwanda, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Russia, Serbia, the United States of America, and Israel are exempt from the ban.

Just 4,000 Russian permanent residents are able to reach Greece each week on flights landing (only) in Athens, Thessaloniki, and Heraklion.

The restrictions are part of the Greek government’s efforts to stop the coronavirus (Covid-19) from spreading throughout the world.
