Spanish airports suffer heavy loss

The consequences of the coronavirus pandemic are disastrous for the entire tourism industry, but in winter, the complete reduction of international travel in Europe still has a devastating impact on aviation companies, which is clearly reflected in the latest report.

Airline Aena released passenger flow data on Friday (March 12). Compared with February 2020, Spain’s entire Aena network lost 14,675,022 passengers in February 2021, a decrease of 86.8%, and the total number of passengers passing through Spanish airports was only 2,229,568.

The decline in passenger flow was mainly due to the decrease in international flights. Compared with February last year, international flights decreased by 92.1%, and there were only 856,799 passengers on international flights. Domestic travel performed slightly better, falling by 77.2% to 1,353,818 passengers.

The decline was reflected in airports throughout Spain, although those that performed slightly better than other were mainly in outlying islands.

Logically speaking, the largest decline in passenger numbers is the main airport, Adolfo Suárez Madrid-BarajasAirport reported 752,969 passengers in February this year, compared with 9,060,038 in the same period last year, a decrease of 82.9%. Barcelona-El Prat Josep Tarradellas Airport handled 286,650 passengers (-91,3%); Gran Canaria, 183,157, (-83.7%).
