The mayor of a commune in Brittany refused to enforce a new 18h-06h Covid-19 curfew in other parts of France.
After the announcement by Prime Minister Jean Castex, the start of the national curfew was moved two hours earlier on Saturday night. Due to the large number of Covid-19 cases and the pressure of health services, 25 provinces in the east of the country have imposed longer curfews. Mr. Castex said that stricter measures will last at least 15 days.
But last weekend, the mayor of Saint-Brieuc, Côtes-d’Armor, Hervé Guihard insisted in an interview with Franceinfo on the weekend that starting from the current 20-hour curfew, “we will not change” .
He said: “We will continue to open schools, nurseries, leisure centers, and reception centers during standard opening hours. Otherwise, the people who suffer the most will always be the most disadvantaged.”
He pointed out that the town did not face an immediate health crisis: “Our number of intensive care units has increased from zero to two. We are not in a crisis area yet. If we are in a crisis, I would not have this reaction at all.”
