Germany faces a longer risk of COVID-19 lockdown

An aide to German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday that if the federal states cannot consistently implement stricter restrictions, Germany faces a longer risk of a coronavirus lockdown, especially if it is highly contagious.

In the case of new variants of sex. Helge Braun, the head of Merkel’s office, said in an interview with Reuters: “Now, with each relaxation, the possibility of longer necessary restrictions is increasing.” Like many other European countries, Germany is also working hard to contain the second wave of the virus.

The Robert Koch Institute for Infectious Diseases said on Thursday that the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany increased by 26,391 daily to 1.84 million. The overall death toll increased by 1,070 to 37,607.

In order to slow the spread of the virus, Merkel and the leaders of Germany’s 16 federal states agreed on Tuesday to extend the nationwide embargo until the end of the month and implement stricter restrictions.

Braun mentioned the fact that several states, such as Lower Saxony and Baden-Württemberg, hope to partially reopen elementary schools before the middle of this month, rather than closing them as agreed until the end of this month.
