The Portuguese Parliament will mark the beginning of Portugal’s presidency of the European Union at 00:00 on January 1, 2021, and will light up the main facade with blue and yellow EU Union colors.
Parliamentary sources told Lusa that the flagpoles of the 27 EU member states will also be placed in front of the Palácio de São Bento and will stay until January 12.
Portugal will succeed Germany in the first half of 2021 as the rotating chairman of the European Council.
The President of the Council of the European Union is responsible for the operation of the Council of the European Union, the upper house of the EU legislative body. It rotates among EU member states every six months. The president is the national government. The chairman’s responsibilities are to preside over the Council’s meetings, determine the Council’s agenda, formulate work plans and promote the Council’s meetings and dialogue with other EU institutions. As of July 2020, the presidency is currently held by Germany.
