The case involved a quadriplegic man who was bedridden after being paralyzed from shoulder to toe in a car accident 11 years ago.
“I feel lighter,” said the man, whose name was Mario even though it wasn’t his real name, according to a statement from the Luca Coscioni association, which helped him in his suicide attempt. Supported.
“I have freed myself from all the stress that has built up over the years.
“I’m tired and I want to be free to choose the end of my life.
“No one can say that I am not too bad to continue living in these conditions and (thus) condemning myself to a life of torture.
“Everyone has to accept their responsibility, put aside the idea of living hypocrisy because we are playing with the lives of sick people.”
Mario was the first person to be given the green light for assisted suicide after the Constitutional Court in 2019 called on the Italian parliament to fill a gap on end-of-life legislation.
This appeal is made in connection with the case of Luca Coscioni’s treasurer, Marco Cappato, helping a blind and hemiplegic man to commit suicide in Switzerland in 2017.
