After laughing at the road signs, especially on social media, became unbearable, the residents of Austrian villages will ring in the new year with the name “Fugging”. They finally got tired of Fucking.
Some experts believe that Fucking’s current name can be traced back to the 11th century.
The minutes of the city council meeting released on Thursday showed that from January 1, 2021, a village with about 100 people 350 kilometers east of Vienna will be named Fugging.
More and more English-speaking tourists have become the key point for capturing photos of themselves on road signs at the entrance of the village, and sometimes post on social media in lewd poses.
According to reports, some have even stolen road signs, causing local authorities to use anti-theft concrete when placing alternatives. In the end, most villagers thought they had had enough.
“I can confirm that the village has been renamed,” said Andrea Holzner, the mayor of Tasdorf, the city where the village belongs.
She told the regional daily Oberoesterreichische Nachrichten (OÖN): “I really don’t want to say anything, we have been enthusiastic enough about it in the past.”
According to the Austrian “Daily News”, these villagers are called Fuckingers, “there are enough tourists and their pranks”.
The village was first officially inhabited around 1070, but local legends indicate that the Bavarian noble Focko in the 6th century did establish the settlement. A map from 1825 uses the spelling Fuking.
