Portugal: British citizens to be registered as residents

On October 19, the Service for Foreigners and Borders (SEF) and the British Embassy launched a campaign to require British citizens who live in Portugal or intend to do so by the end of the year to register as residents.

The movement is part of Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union. British citizens who have lived in the country and intend to continue to live after the end of the year, and British citizens who intend to arrive in Portugal before December 31 and intend to live here, must obtain the corresponding registration certificate from the council of the city where they live .

In the press release of the SEF and the British Embassy in Lisbon, it is explained that resident registration is required so that British citizens can prove that they are protected by the “Withdrawal Agreement” between the EU and the UK, thereby safeguarding their rights, including in December 2020 The right to work, health care, education and tax benefits after the transition period ends on 31st. The EU and the United Kingdom decided to establish a transition period, which ends at the end of the year.

After the transition period is over, the residence permits of registered British citizens will continue to be accepted. The report indicates that 34,358 British people live in Portugal.
