Spain: Balearic Islands to enforce face coverings

The Balearic regional government is preparing to introduce the obligation to wear face masks in all public spaces, regardless of social distance, in accordance with measures taken in Catalonia and to prevent further infection of the coronavirus (Covid-19) with the Islands.

The funds can come into effect this weekend. Wearing face masks is already compulsory in Spain, but only if the social distance cannot be maintained – and the police have the right to punish citizens for wearing them. It is part of the measures in the royal decree that set the guidelines governing the New Normality.

Wearing face masks is compulsory if you cannot maintain a social distance of 1.5 meters, and fines of up to 100 euros if you do not comply.

It is expected that new measures in the Balearic Islands will mean that both residents and tourists will have to wear a mask at all times in a public place, regardless of the social rule of 1.5 m distance – except for beaches and swimming pools and except when the nature of the activity makes it incompatible, e.g. playing sports or exercising, or when customers eat and drink in bars and restaurants.

German tourists maintain social distance by waiting for luggage at the airport of Palma de Mallorca on June 15, 2020.
