Spanish Minister of Health Salvador Illa stated that the first coronavirus (Covid-19) vaccines will be available in Spain “by the end of December” this year.
Once the vaccine is confirmed to be safe and effective, Spain has reached an agreement with the European Commission to participate in the plan to purchase up to 400 million doses of vaccine from the British-Swedish pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca from EU countries. In an interview with La Sexta TV on Wednesday, Illa said that “all went well” and that by the end of 2020, the vaccine should have been used in Spain.
Illa stated that in order to “ensure fair use throughout Europe without causing competition among countries”, the EU will concentrate on purchasing doses. The vaccine was developed by researchers at the University of Oxford and is currently one of the most advanced vaccines, and clinical trials are already underway to ensure its safety and effectiveness.
According to the agreement announced by AstraZeneca on August 14, the European Union will distribute fairly among countries based on the population. Therefore, Spain should receive about 31 million doses of vaccine initially.
