Justice Minister Monica Maeland said on Wednesday that the Norwegian government is enacting legislation to allow curfews to be imposed after new COVID-19 cases reach record levels.

Maeland said at the press conference: “But let me make it clear immediately that from today, we have not considered imposing a curfew or similar measures…this is something we hope we will never need.”

According to data from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (FHI), there were 930 new COVID-19 cases in Norway on Tuesday, the highest daily record on record.

Although Norway has one of the lowest infection rates in Europe, the number of cases in Norway has been on the rise in the past month, and its R value-representing the average number of people who spread the virus-is estimated to be 1.4.
