Germany has asked Taiwan to persuade Taiwanese manufacturers to help alleviate the shortage of semiconductor chips in the automotive sector, which is hindering its emerging economy recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Due to semiconductor delivery issues, automakers around the world are closing assembly lines. In some cases, the former Trump administration’s actions on China’s major chip factories have made this situation worse. The shortage affected Volkswagen, Ford Motor Company, Subaru Corporation, Toyota Motor Corporation, Nissan Motor Corporation, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and other car manufacturers.
In a letter seen by Reuters on Sunday, German Minister of Economic Affairs Peter Altmaier asked his Taiwan counterpart Wang Meihua to contract with Taiwan Semiconductor, one of the world’s largest contract chip manufacturers and one of the German manufacturers. Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (TSMC) discussed this issue.
The main supplier. Altmaier wrote: “If you can handle this and emphasize the importance of adding TSMC to TSMC for the German automotive industry, I will be very happy.”
Altmaier said its goal is to achieve more semiconductor production capacity and deliveries in the short and medium term.
