The Italian Society of Medical Oncology (AIOM) said on Monday that approximately 3.6 million people are alive in Italy today having been diagnosed with some form of tumor, a 37% increase from the number of cancer survivors in the country 10 years ago.
But the association also issued an alert about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the fight against cancer. It said that in the first nine months of 2020, Italy had reduced the number of screening tests by more than 2 million.
AIOM chairman Giordano Beretta said: “The delay in early diagnosis may lead to an increase in mortality.” “The prevention program must be restarted as soon as possible and provide more funds.”
