According to the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE), just 5.4 million overseas visitors visited Spain in the first half of 2021, from January to June.
According to an INE news release, the number of visitors who came this year till July is almost half of the amount that arrived during the same period in 2020, which accounted for 10.8 million foreign passengers in January and February before the pandemic began.
“The number of visitors visiting Spain fell by 49.6% in the first half of 2021, surpassing 5.4 million. In the same period last year, 10.8 million foreign tourists visited,” according to an INE statement.

According to the same press release, this year’s results are much lower than the 38.1 million international travelers that visited Spanish territory during the first half of 2019, which set a new high of 83.7 million visitors.
The country received 8.8 million tourists in June 2019, which is greater than the entire number of visitors in the first six months of 2021.
The reduction is also visible in terms of overall expenditure by overseas tourists. International tourists spent about €5.8 billion from January to June, which is 51.4 percent less than the same time last year and half of what they spent the year before.
“Total expenditure by international visitors dropped by 51.4 percent in the first half of 2021 compared to the same period the previous year, reaching 5,765 million euros,” according to INE.
However, it has been reported that international tourists stayed an average of 7.4 days in June 2021, an increase of 1.4 days over the same period in the previous year.
Furthermore, according to the statistics, the country received the most visits from France and Germany, each with 1.2 million tourists, followed by Italy with 310,000 visitors and the Netherlands with 290,000 visitors.
Due to the limitations placed by the British government against Britons until May, just 273,333 tourists came from the United Kingdom. This is a significant change from June 2019 numbers, which has had a significant impact on the country’s economy.
