Last winter in Spain, protective measures against coronavirus, such as masks, extra handwashing, and social distancing, resulted in a dramatic reduction in the number of people infected with flu, but experts are now concerned that this could result in a loss of acquired immunity and even an increased susceptibility to the disease.

Last year, “there were essentially no cases of the flu,” but it affects between 250 and 300 individuals per 100,000 people per week during a normal season. According to Iván Sanz, the scientific director of the National Flu Center of Valladolid, “the line approached absolute zero” in 2020.
While this may appear to be good news at first glance, Mr Sanz has warned that because there has been virtually no virus circulation for nearly two years, the population’s immunity has almost certainly been lowered, and with a relaxation of Covid safety measures, the next season could hit people hard.
Experts are also concerned that if the Spanish government begins immunizing children under the age of 12 against Covid, limitations will be eased even more, resulting in a more severe flu season. Many factors influence the severity of the flu, according to the scientists, and last year saw the biggest number of individuals in Spain ever get vaccinated against influenza, something that should be pushed again this winter.
