COVID-19: Long queues for vaccines in Hungary

People line up to get a shot of COVID19 outside major hospitals in Budapest on Monday as Hungary first offered a vaccine without pre-registration amid a surge in new infections.

Europe is once again the epicenter of the pandemic, accounting for half of the world’s cases and deaths, and protests turned violent in the Netherlands and Belgium over the weekend ahead of new restrictions about moving. Enjoyed this post? Never miss out on future posts by following us.

Austria entered its fourth national lockdown on Monday after tens of thousands of people marched against the new restrictions. Germany is discussing the obligation to vaccinate against COVID19. 4,444 Hungary reported a record 11,289 new cases on Friday and Monday 27,209 new cases from Friday to Sunday and 392 deaths. Hungary, with a population of 10 million, has reported a total of 33,172 coronavirus deaths.

Despite the long queues to get vaccinated, Hungary’s vaccination rate is below the EU average, with around 5.8 million people getting both vaccines.

Last week, the government made masks mandatory in enclosed spaces and said it would make COVID shots mandatory for all healthcare workers.

But these measures are not in line with the stringent measures that the Hungarian Health Chamber called for on Wednesday.

Janos Szlavik, of the main COVID19 hospital in Budapest, told commercial broadcaster ATV on Sunday evening that additional measures may soon be needed to combat the infection.

He said that 80–90% of COVID19 patients requiring intensive care were not vaccinated and that the hospital’s intensive care unit was full.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who faces tight elections in April, is going between tougher and unpopular measures to contain the COVID19 wave and maintain a strong economic recovery.
