Cumeada and Castelo Rodrigo are two Portuguese communities that have won the World Tourism Organization‘s Best Tourism Village Award.
The award was presented during the OMT’s 24th General Assembly, which is now taking place in Madrid.
These awards are being granted for the first time this year, with the goal of recognizing the greatest rural destinations throughout the world and contributing to the betterment of rural regions and local communities through tourism. The OMT also hopes that by awarding these prizes, it will help to increase the visibility of the villages and draw attention to their tourist potential, in order to attract more visitors; promote the traditions and culture of the regions, giving them greater projection and recognition on an international scale; and encourage village development through transformative sustainability approaches – economic, social, and environmental.
More than 170 submissions from 75 countries were submitted for the first round. Portugal submitted three villages, which is the maximum number of candidacies allowed per country.
The Best Tourism Community seal is valid for three years, following which the village will be re-evaluated in order to renew the seal based on sustainability criteria.
“Tourism is, without a doubt, a lever for rural development,” stated Rita Marques, Secretary of State for Tourism. The awarding of this medal also validates the national tourist strategy, which has been establishing a set of activities since 2017 in order to construct a future tourism that is both sustainable and innovative. And it is these good practices that we want to see applied on a big scale, so that Portugal can become a year-round destination for people from all over the world.”
