Love Sardinia: A lovely blend of sea, sand and history

Sardinia, the Mediterranean’s second-largest island after Sicily, offers a delightful mix of water, sand, and history.

Thousands of nuraghe (stone structures) dot the terrain, indicating that locals have been enjoying the pleasant climate for millennia.

Sardinia has something for everyone, from the luxurious Costa Smeralda in the north to historic Alghero in the northwest to the bustling city of Cagliari in the south, with many lovely villages and pristine sandy beaches in between.

Without leaving European coasts, Sardinia features some of the most beautiful beaches. The sand is very white, and the sea is the deepest blue.

Imagine dropping anchor in the scalloped bays of Costa Smeralda, where celebrities and supermodels frolic in emerald waters; playing castaway in the coves of the Golfo di Orosei, where high cliffs promise isolation; or sailing to the granite islands of La Maddalena.

Unroll your beach towel and you’ll never want to leave, whether you’re walking barefoot across the dunes on the wave-lashed Costa Verde or lying on the Costa del Sud’s silky smooth bays.

Sardinia is one of Europe’s last great island adventures, whether you go slow or fast, select coast or country.

Hike through the lush, quiet interior to Tiscali’s nuraghic ruins at dusk. Climbers spider up the limestone cliffs of Cala Luna’s crescent-shaped cove on the vertiginous coastal route.

Alternatively, hike through holm oak forests to Gola Su Gorropu’s enormous boulder-strewn gorge.

Windsurfers on the north coast can’t get enough of the sea, while divers wax poetic over shipwrecks off the coast of Cagliari, the underground Nereo Cave, and Nora’s buried Roman ruins.
