France: Face masks compulsory in 30 departments

In response to an increase in Covid-19 infections associated to the extremely infectious Delta strain, 30 French departments have imposed an obligatory mask wearing regulation for outdoor places, impacting several attractive coastal cities where people have come for their traditional summer vacation.

Masks are now required in outdoor areas in Morbihan and Côtes-d’Armor, popular with visitors and families seeking sea and sun in western Brittany, France.

In August, additional health measures to combat the spread of Covid-19 will be implemented in 30 of 96 departments across continental France.

The ARS office in Brittany reported that the rate of infection in the region had increased to 101.3 per 100,000 people (+34.3 in the last week), with a 2.8 percent rate of positive infections.

The virus is “currently spreading throughout Brittany,” according to a statement released by the government on Friday. “Infection rates are growing across the region, especially among young people.”

The regulation will apply to major coastal communities, where all individuals over the age of 11 must wear face masks from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. from August 1 to 31.

According to the police, masks will not be required on beaches or in national park regions.

France recorded 7,363 Covid patients in hospitals on Friday, 127 higher than the previous day.
