Venice started its famous carnival this weekend-due to the pandemic, it is not crowded with the usual tourists.
Italy eased restrictions on the coronavirus on Monday, allowing most regions to enjoy greater freedom. Venice is now one of the low-risk “yellow” categories-but residents are still not allowed to travel outside the area.
Before the pandemic, Carnival brought about 70 million euros ($84 million) to Venice’s finances, and more than 5 million tourists poured into Venice.
The local artisan association launched a discount campaign to encourage residents to participate in this year’s celebration without foreign tourists.
After the epidemic broke out, the Venetian authorities were forced to shorten the carnival last year. This year, it will hold some celebrations online and show the Venetian Carnival feast through video.
