France‘s High Authority for Health decided on Friday not to inject the innoculation developed by Moderna for the country’s booster vaccination campaign.
The French health regulator decided on 15th of October to no longer allow the Moderna vaccine to be injected as a booster dose against Covid-19.
Only Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine is used for the booster campaign henceforth for over 65s, immunocompromised people and their relatives, people at risk as well as health workers.
If Moderna had been used until now, the health authority (HAS) did not question its use “in order not to disrupt current campaign”.
Sweden and Finland banned those under the age of 30 from using Moderna at the beginning of the month.
The majority of these inflammations, according to Swedish officials, are harmless and will go away on their own, but if symptoms develop, medical counsel should be sought.
“In any case, these [myocarditis and pericarditis] remain rare and spontaneously resolving in nearly all cases,” the HAS noted in a press release.
Before deciding to deliver a vaccination in France, the High Authority for Health usually seeks advice from the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
At the end of October, the European Commission is expected to make a judgement on the use of Moderna as a booster.
“This will identify the target population for these injections and the quantity of substance required,” HAS president Dominique Le Guludec told the weekly Le Journal de Dimanche.
There is no necessity for the authorities to make an emergency judgment on the use of Moderna as a booster dose because France’s health indicators remain positive.
According to estimates from Santé publique France as of October 16, the number of hospitalizations due to Covid-19 is decreased, with 6,437 persons admitted.
Over the previous seven days, an average of 4,679 new cases were reported.
