Love Loire Valley: Old world villages and storybook chateaux

Throughout the year, the Loire Valley has much to offer. The best time to visit the Loire Valley is in late spring and summer if you want to get the most out of your vacation and experience the châteaux’s splendor both inside and out.

As the days grow longer, the weather warms up, and the flowers begin to bloom, you’ll be able to fully appreciate both the grandeur of the châteaux and the gardens in mid-May and early-June.

The Loire, once fought over by Gauls, Romans, Visigoths, and even Attila the Hun, is now adorned with old world villages and storybook chateaux.

Bike along the beautiful valley, stopping at strongholds in Amboise and Angers, the UNESCO-listed Chartres Cathedral, and Nantes’ Gothic cathedral.

The Musee Jules Vernes showcases reproductions of the futuristic author’s inventions. Pay your tribute to other past occupants, like the Romans in Tours, the Touraine cave dwellers, and Joan of Arc, the liberation of Orleans.

From June through early September, the Loire Valley is in full bloom, with light and fountain performances, festivals, and fully flowered gardens.

Expect longer queues than during the shoulder season because of the throng at this time of year. The weather can also be oppressively hot at times, especially if you plan to cycle across the Loire Valley.

The Loire Valley is a wonderful and magical region of France that may easily be explored for months. For the most part, however, this is not achievable. Instead, two or three days in the Loire Valley region are sufficient to have a good sense of the place and see the popular châteaux without becoming overly tired.

There are castles to visit in addition to châteaux. Aim for two or three each day; any more will be overkill, and the Loire Valley has more to offer than castles.
